Statement of Needs

With recent changes in the understanding of the prognosis for melanoma (the current impetus behind the changes in the AJCC staging system), a growing knowledge of the biology of melanoma, and an emerging understanding of predictors of response to therapy, the surgeon has new insights into management of this disease. Using a case-based approach, this program draws together an expert interdisciplinary panel in surgical oncology, radiation oncology, and medical oncology to address the latest updates to the fundamental three R's of melanoma management: risk, relapse, and response.

Target Audience

This activity is directed toward general surgeons and surgical oncologists interested in the management of melanoma.

Educational Objectives

After attending this symposium, participants should be able to:

• Describe appropriate excisional procedures for the primary tumor and lymph node evaluation techniques for cutaneous melanoma;
• Describe factors impacting the risk of distant metastatic disease as well as relapse in patients with primary melanoma;
• Compare and contrast the risk for additional lymph node involvement in sentinel lymph node–positive patients with differing levels of tumor burden;
• List factors impacting the response to therapy in primary, regional, and distant melanoma;
• Describe the approach to the management of recurrent locoregional melanoma.
